We’re heading out today for another epic road trip to the east coast, another 3000 mile odyssey in the Odyssey. This time, we’re heading first to Somerset, PA for a family reunion, then to DC for my mother-in-law’s !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! at Arlington National Cemetery. Then it’s off to Louisville, KY and Mammoth Cave, KY on the way home. The trip will end with a massive 16-hour stint from Mammoth Cave to Austin.
I stumbled upon
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
about traveling with kids. It’s a fun read. Fortunately, our boys are older than this, but many of the headaches can be the same. Still, they have learned to be good travelers, so it’s not all that bad. I’m looking forward to hitting the road.
OPPO represent!
For all you hardcore Planelops out there, have no fear! The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! posts will continue while I’m away (thank you, Kinja future posts). I wouldn’t want you to miss them!
Y’all take care of each other.

Enjoy and safe travels. We’re also heading out soon, for a much needed week off in southern MN.
I’d say “enjoy” Arlington, but that sounds odd, so I’ll say “revere” Arlington.

I grew up in Johnstown and lived in Somerset and Berlin for a few years. Headed to Seven Springs?

I took a few long road trips in my 2nd Odyssey, but nothing that long! Happy trails.
Those Oddy seats were so comfortable, when I sold it for parts I kept one of the captain’s chairs and made an office chair out of it.

No, we’ve got the family reunion on Sunday out near Edie, then we’re going to hit Kennywood on Monday with my brother then do Mt. Davis and the Flight 93 Memorial on Tuesday. Then we head to DC on Wednesday.
My dad was born in Somerset, and I've got a cousin who lives in Berlin. Small world.

I’ve got three boys, so we pull one of the middle seats for extra cabin space. It’s a great arrangement. I’ve also got the cabin wired with AC so the kids can charge their phones etc. When the extra captains chair is in the garage, I have been known to sit in it during the winter and smoke my cigar. Very comfy indeed.

I hope your road trip goes just as awesome as mine did. Your road trip is distance longer but driving time shorter than mine. Thanks slow canadian highwayss!

Kennywood is the shit! I live in Jersey but have gone there far more than any other amusement park, even though there’s a Six Flags about an hour away from where I live. There’s just something about that park, it doesn’t feel overly corporate.
As for your trip, you might want to alter it a bit if you can and take it more through WV on the way there. Ohio is boring as shit and the speed limit is 65mph, if I remember correctly. WV is either 70 or 75 last I was there.

That's a good tip. My kids have never seen Cincinnati or St. Louis, though, and Ohio would be a new state. I considered a WV route. I'll take another look at that option. Thanks.

Edit: not St. Louis. That's just a bit out of the way.

Thanks! We're not leaving until my wife gets home from work. We're pretty much loaded up, and I'm itching to hit the road. I'm a sucker for a road trip, and usually do the majority of the driving. Two years ago we made a trip of similar length out to San Diego and the Grand Canyon. I drove every mile of it. Not that my wife is a bad driver, I just hate sitting and doing nothing.

You should swing through SC. ;)

That would be one hell of a swing.
